British teenager Hannah Klugman won the biggest title of her career by beating Elsa Jacquemot 6-2 6-4 in the final of the Lexus Wrexham Open. The 17-year-old, a former junior world number one, claimed the W100 title without dropping a set all week.
Klugman becomes the second successive British player to win the Wrexham title, following Wales’ Mimi Xu last year. She is also the youngest Briton to win a singles trophy at W100 level or higher.
Klugman sets the pace
Klugman pressed world number 157 Jacquemot from the first game. She missed her first two break-point opportunities, but she converted her next chance just two games later. A double break then sealed an emphatic first set for the Briton.
She carried that momentum into the second set and raced to a 5-1 lead.
A tense finish
In the biggest match of her career so far, Klugman had to fight to finish the job. Jacquemot pulled back to 5-4, but the home favourite served out the victory at the second time of asking.
“I was shaking afterwards, but just so, so happy and proud of myself again,” said Klugman.
“It’s been such an amazing week and to top it off with a win at such a high-level tournament, these are big moments for me as a young player.”
More British success
Britain also celebrated in the doubles. Freya Christie and Eden Silva beat Japan’s Hiroko Kuwata and India’s Ankita Raina 6-2 6-3 in the doubles final.
