British teenager Mika Stojsavljevic was unable to back up her maiden WTA Tour win as she was knocked out in the last 16 of the Hong Kong Open.
The 17-year-old shocked former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin on Wednesday after being restored to the tournament as a lucky loser with only an hour’s notice.
The Londoner was beaten 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 by Turkish world No 67 Zeynep Sonmez on Thursday in a little over two hours.
Stojsavljevic entered the Hong Kong Open ranked 411th in the world and is now just outside the top 350 in the live rankings following her victory over Kenin.
A Rising Talent
In 2024, Stojsavljevic became the first British player in 15 years to win the US Open girls’ title, following Heather Watson‘s triumph in 2009.
She made her Billie Jean King Cup debut for Great Britain against Australia in Melbourne in April, defeating world No 36 Talia Gibson in straight sets.
What Comes Next
Sonmez’s reward for defeating Stojsavljevic is a quarter-final against Claire Liu, who beat Katie Boulter earlier in the tournament.
Three-time Grand Slam quarter-finalist Sorana Cîrstea is the top seed in Hong Kong, with Alexandra Eala seeded second. The tournament runs until Sunday, with the WTA Finals at Indian Wells starting the same day.
