Canada’s Fernandez withdraws from Hong Kong Open due to shoulder injury

Leylah Fernandez withdrew from the Hong Kong Tennis Open on Wednesday because of a shoulder injury.

The 24-year-old from Laval, Quebec, was scheduled to face American Sofia Kenin in the first round.

The withdrawal follows a busy stretch for Fernandez, who reached back-to-back WTA Tour finals in Tokyo and Ningbo, China. She lost to Russia’s Diana Shnaider in Sunday’s Tokyo final, a week after falling to Elena Rybakina in Ningbo.

Her recent results lifted her five spots to No. 18 in the world rankings. It is her return to the top 20 for the first time in more than four years.

Replacement Wins in Hong Kong

Britain’s Mika Stojsavljevic took Fernandez’s place in the Hong Kong draw. She defeated Kenin 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
